Working with an Architect: Schematic Design

elevation Schematic Design is a sketched exploration of design options and solutions. It determines which spaces or rooms are needed, their sizes and relationships to each other, and an overall exterior appearance for the building. This process involves repeated drawing, discussion, and revision before arriving at the ideal solution.

During design, consider your plan's sustainability for lifestyle, furniture, family, and future needs. Always make sure you are comfortable with any changes your architect recommends. Remember, you're a partner in the project. Being involved with your architect ensures your project meets your expectations.

Where to Begin

? Look around. Go for a drive. Get an idea of what you like.
? Take pictures, read and clip magazines, and collect examples of styles that appeal to you.
? Make a list of your needs and wants.
? Think about how you live and how you use space.
? Develop a list of basics (general size, style, and number of rooms).
? Discuss your interests with the architect.
